We are all aware of the importance of a healthy diet. Our supermarkets are packed with ‘foods’ containing additives and preservatives, and who knows how the cumulative effect of these ‘toxins’ will affect our bodies when ingested over a number of years.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and has many functions. It is a two-way membrane that is responsible for the elimination of waste products and toxins. The skin is also capable of absorbing substances that can then enter the bloodstream.
Many of the skin-care products seen in stores contain a vast array of chemicals, preservatives and synthetic ingredients. These potentially harmful ingredients can be absorbed through our skin and affect our well-being.
Some are highly toxic. Some are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). Some can affect our hormone balance. Some can cause birth deformities.
These chemicals can also be transferred to new-born babies through breast-milk.
Here are just a few of the chemicals found in our every-day products.
Triclosan
A synthetic antibacterial agent. Researchers have raised concerns about Triclosan and its link to dioxins, which are highly carcinogenic chemicals that can cause severe health problems such as;
- weakening of the immune system
- decreased fertility
- altered sex hormones
- birth defects
- cancer
Sodium Laureth Sulphate A strong and harsh detergent used in industry as a degreaser.
Products containing this substance can affect those prone to eczema and other skin conditions. Sodium Laureth Sulphate strips the top layers of skin of its moisture causing it to dry out.
Paraffinum Liquidum A petroleum by-product that clogs pores and interferes with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins.
Parabens Used to prolong the shelf-life of products.
They can cause gastric irritation, skin rashes, and affect asthma-sufferers in particular.
There has also been much controversy concerning a possible link between parabens used in deodorants and breast-cancer.
This list only highlights a small percentage of the potential health hazards we encounter every day.
Natural Blends has been established to provide you with alternative, natural products; the ingredients provided by nature itself.
Due to the natural content of these products, certain items in the range will be most effective when used within the stated expiry date.
Because of individual sensitivities, there may be products that not everyone can tolerate, as is the case with food allergies. Test a product on the area of skin in the crook of the elbow and leave for 12-24 hours. Signs of an allergic reaction include red, warm skin, which may perhaps be itchy and/or with a rash.
The majority of packaging materials are recyclable, so we urge you to recycle where appropriate, and help to preserve our environment.
Please note that current legislation requires that all cosmetic ingredients be listed by their INCI names.
